1911 census - unlinked family trees.
This page is the culmination of a real labour of love - an attempt to ensure that every person recorded as Doodson appears on a family tree on this site. The 1911 England and Wales census listed 385 people called Doodson. I've had to work on the assumption that the transcription from the handwritten returns has been done accurately, not always a valid assumption, given how difficult some of the handwriting is to decipher!
In each case I've attempted to trace the people to an existing tree (i.e. one of the main trees on the Family Trees page), and trace ancestors as far back as possible. But as many branches of Doodsons don't link to the other trees I've had to create a lot of new documents, listed below.
In some of these documents there are multiple trees, grouped by the town/village where they lived in 1911. You'll see that they are nearly all in the traditional areas for Doodsons, i.e. Bolton, Bury and various townships between those towns and Manchester.
There were four people I couldn't trace prior to 1911 at all, so rather than put them on separate documents here they are:
- Rosanna Doodson, born 1876 in Derby. Visiting the Maddocks family at 29 Harcourt Street, Derby. Her occupation recorded as "Poor Law Officer", and she was recorded as being married. But I haven't been able to trace anything else about Rosanna...
- George J Doodson, born in 1911 in Derby. Recorded as being a boarder with the Kilford family at 64 Sutherland Road, Derby. Very young indeed! Unable to trace any details of his birth in BMD records, and not able to find a link between anyone call Doodson and the Kilford family.
- Margaret Doodson, born in 1886 in Leigh. Recorded as living with the Morgan family at 7 Taylor Street, Leigh - her occupation listed as "servant". She was single. No trace of her prior to 1911. The census form is a bit unclear so she might just have been "Dootson" rather than "Doodson"!
- Robert Doodson, born in 1872 in Bradford, Yorkshire. This poor fellow was recorded as being a "lunatic", an inmate at the Prestwich County Lunatic Asylum. His occupation (presumably before he entered the asylum) was recorded as "tinplate worker". No trace before 1911.
